Material Procurement

材料調達

It's here!! Record-breaking downpours occur several times a year!! Today, the house is flooded with water due to a leak. It's an old house that needs to be fixed. There aren't enough balls to catch the drops, so I'm half-giving up and thinking, "Let's just leave it alone."

Well, that aside, it was a sunny day yesterday so I went to Aki City to get some materials.

I buy a year's worth. Every year I visit Yamawa Mokuzai in Aki City. Yamawa Mokuzai is a sawmill, but they also build houses. Please check out their website, which is well worth a look, from the link above (^^♪

Thank you for your assistance.

Nakayoshi Library Materials
Natural cypress wood

There are lots of large natural cypress trees. The difference between artificial and natural cypress is clear! It's the density of the grain. As the trees age, the gaps between the rings become denser.

Yes. Like this. When the grain is this dense, there are fewer plank grains, and when the board is made, it will have only straight grain. This means that the wood has very beautiful grain and is less likely to warp.

I absolutely have to tell this to my customers. I don't think I can convey it in words, so I will explain it in detail when the logs arrive in November.

This natural cypress wood will become the furniture for the Nakayoshi Library!!

Good materials make good furniture.

Outside, the cedar planks are sunbathing in the sea breeze. Yamawa Mokuzai does not use artificial drying, but sticks to natural drying. This keeps the material at a moderate moisture content and makes it lustrous. The drying period varies depending on the thickness of the material.

Even so, this cedar is huge! It's about 70cm tall.

On this day, we ordered 600 pieces of cypress boards to be used as materials and 600 pieces to be ordered from logs.

By the way, the logs are harvested around November. They are used after it gets cold. Trees harvested in the summer tend to get moldy when they are naturally dried, so they are treated with mold-preventing chemicals. At Nakayoshi Library, we only use materials harvested in the winter, without any disinfection (^^♪

Finally, we had a tour of the warehouse, which contains high-quality Yanase cedar lumber .

There it is!! I want it. But when I heard the price, I had to stop... (lol)
