For making flower beds

花壇づくりに

February is coming to an end in a flash. I'm glad it's getting warmer, but for those who suffer from hay fever, the difficult time is coming. Today, I'd like to write about how it went after I did some DIY with Mr. Morimoto of Takasu Kindergarten, who I'm taking care of, on the recent holiday.

Tree planting project at Takasu Second Kindergarten

As an activity to bring hope to those in financial difficulty and medical workers who have been forced to close their businesses due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, children and their parents will be planting "Kibou Sakura" (Space Gourd Cherry Trees). Nakayoshi Library will help create wooden messages as part of this activity!

A large 3m message board made of natural wood.

Apparently, the gourd cherry trees picked by children in Niyodogawa Town, Kochi Prefecture, were taken into space, and after returning to Earth, a small portion of them sprouted, which is why they came to be called the Space Gourd Cherry Tree. (This is a very brief summary, so please see below for more details.)

The flower beds were also handcrafted by the teacher.

The first step in the preparation for planting trees in March is to make flower beds. The teachers did everything from procuring materials to construction themselves, without asking a professional contractor. This time, we were allowed to help out.

The flower bed measures 8m x 5m. A wooden message board will also be set up in the large flower bed.

The teacher's friends also helped out and they were extremely efficient!

We line them up one by one, adjusting their levels.

Since I had the chance, I decided to try my hand at making something similar.

Although my legs were giving out in pain due to the poor footing, I finally finished the first step.

It took 3 hours to complete the whole circuit. By the way, the total number of bricks needed is about 1000.

That's all for today. It was a mind-blowing task, but it was so engrossing and fun. I want to try it at home.

I will also be posting on my blog the finished wooden message board and the children's tree planting activities. Please look forward to it!
