Many inexpensive chests are not made of wood, so the drawers are light and easy to pull out, but the quality is commensurate with the price. On the other hand, high-end furniture such as wedding dressers are made for adults, so the drawers are heavy and difficult to pull out. Furniture with drawers, such as chests, tends to have air stagnation inside the furniture. The chemicals used in furniture will eventually evaporate and the smell will disappear, but they are constantly being emitted when the furniture is new. These chemicals are used in MDF, particle board, plywood, etc. Even if the furniture meets the JIS standard for the amount of chemical emissions [F☆☆☆☆], it can be harmful to small children and sensitive people. Nakayoshi Library's chests are made entirely of solid wood and only small amounts of adhesive are used. We provide furniture that is kind to not only children but to everyone who uses it.

Appearance and ease of use

This wood-scented chest is approximately 92cm high (82cm for the legless type), a height that can be used even by adults. The design is very simple, and it also has wooden handles. The top surface can be used as a workspace, or to display some miscellaneous items. It can also be used as a small TV stand. The convenient height makes it easy to take things in and out without having to bend over.

A natural insect repellent that is safe for children

Many people buy commercial moth repellents to protect their clothes from moth damage. Some of these products are not harmful to health, but moth repellents are still just a mass of chemicals. All Nakayoshi Library chests are finished with Japanese cypress. The oils in cypress contain a unique scent and ingredients that insects dislike, creating a natural moth repellent effect. Considering that cypress is used in most structural materials for wooden buildings in Japan, it is clear that it is resistant to damage caused by moth damage.

Natural moisture control

The good thing about wooden chests is that the wood itself regulates humidity. You can't expect much effect from furniture made of plywood, but Nakayoshi Library furniture made of hinoki and cedar absorbs moisture when the humidity is high, and releases moisture into the air in the dry winter conditions. The reason why furniture makes a crackling sound when you receive it is because the wood is breathing. This is not a normal thing, but a phenomenon unique to furniture that is finished with vegetable oil to allow the wood to breathe. Even if you find the drawers a little difficult to open, they will return to their normal state after a certain period of time.

Recommended point 2: Use it in a natural state.

Nakayoshi Library's children's furniture is primarily made from cypress from Kochi Prefecture. The trees are 50 to 70 years old and are of high quality. There are few knots and only the best parts are used, so the cost of materials is not cheap, but the longer you use it, the more it will turn amber and improve in luster. As time goes on, artificial wood grain "looks" are often used, but considering the harm to humans caused by harmful substances released from adhesives, we still prefer to provide natural wood for children.

Recommended point 3: Uses safe and natural paints

The process that Nakayoshi Library spends the most time on is painting and polishing. We place great importance on the safety of polishing for children, so we round the corners and finish so that they don't hurt when they touch it. We polish the pieces many times to make them smooth. And then there's the paint. We use vegetable-derived Libos oil for the paint. We polish the pieces while allowing vegetable oils such as linseed oil and perilla oil to penetrate the wood. It's not a petroleum-based paint, so it has no unpleasant odor and brings out the wood grain. Best of all, it's harmless to the human body, so you can apply it without a mask. Of course, we use the same paint for the toys as well.
