A small nursery school with a woody scent
This is an in-house nursery school run by a company that operates social welfare facilities, located on a small hill in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture.
The interior has plaster walls and cedar plank flooring. The nursery is unified with cypress furniture. The nursery is in a great location surrounded by mountains. And as soon as you step inside the nursery, the scent of wood fills the air.

We have worked with the company on several kindergartens in the past, and this is the fourth. This time, we are helping a small-scale nursery school that takes in children from 0 to 2 years old, so although the capacity is not large, we are carefully designing the height and specifications of the furniture as if it were for infants.
The focus was on the height of the furniture
At a small-scale daycare center that looks after 0-2 year olds, we suggest how to use the furniture depending on the type of daycare you do. [It should be fixed and not moveable on a daily basis! And it should be able to be moved flexibly when there is an event] These were the conditions we had when we received the request.
The originally spacious space on one floor is divided into three equal parts with furniture. The furniture is 60-70cm high so that children can see the other side at eye level and nursery teachers can see the contents of the adjacent space while squatting.
Dividing the space gently helps maintain a sense of openness
If the furniture is too tall, it will create a feeling of oppression and the children will feel closed in. 60cm is a little higher than an adult's knee. You can see the whole floor and keep an eye on all the children.
Low furniture also encourages children to stand up
Some babies start standing up as early as 8 months old. It is useful to have furniture that can support them at that time, and that is of a suitable height and cannot be moved by the child's strength. In that sense, the 60cm height also serves the purpose of providing storage and encouraging the baby to stand up.

Why wooden furniture and spaces are good
It seems that more and more kindergartens, nurseries, hospitals, etc. are choosing wood over plastic or steel to create spaces for children. When I talk to teachers and directors on-site, they say that wood has an outstanding feel, appearance, and scent.
One of the characteristics of wood that artificial materials do not have is the change over time. The cypress used by Nakayoshi Library is natural wood from Kochi Prefecture. When it is first delivered, the whole room is filled with the pleasant scent of cypress. Cypress has healing properties. Children grow up touching nursery furniture made from such wood every day. It is truly a natural space. It is difficult to choose only wood for buildings due to various regulations, but it is possible for nursery furniture. Just like having ornamental plants in a room, incorporating wooden items can enrich the mind. In recent years, many local governments have started to offer subsidies for using wood. There are half-price to full-price subsidies, so the idea that wooden nursery furniture = expensive and unaffordable is gradually crumbling.
What about natural wood when exposed to water? Does it get moldy?
Nakayoshi Library's nursery furniture is coated with natural vegetable oil twice. The first coat penetrates the wood and hardens internally. The second coat of oil creates a coating on the surface. This coating finish means that it can withstand some water. For this reason, please wipe the surfaces of tables and furniture with a tightly wrung out cloth to maintain the furniture.
Delivery time
The peak season is from October to April. Orders placed during this period will take 2 months to be delivered. For other periods, please allow approximately 1 month for delivery.

Nakayoshi Library's nursery furniture is manufactured in our own factory in Kochi.
